EDIT 2023: This review reflects my personal opinion, based on my personal experience. Making this edit because even 13 years later I still have negative feelings about how my custody case was handled. There a couple of things that were not addressed in my case that only created conflict for the past 13 years between myself and the other parent . One example is that there was no clause that determined which parent would claim the child as a dependent on their taxes. Had the original custody order been more thorough, perhaps it would have alleviated the constant arguments that came during tax time. Joe Marvin took a cookie cutter approach to my case and did not consider how a 5-2-2-5 would affect our family. This particular time sharing set-up is what many lawyers and judges will want to default to, but it DOES NOT WORK for everyone (if anyone). It was a major detriment to the upbringing of my child. Save yourself the anguish that I went through and find yourself a family law attorney who will not set you up for failure. I spent all of my life savings to hire Joe and could not afford to retain another attorney to modify my custody agreement. In response to my original review, Mavin law office writes "It is always our goal to provide each client with the best representation possible. Mr. Marvin indicated you needed to go through mediation prior to re-opening your case with the Court. You were unwilling to follow through with his free advice." This is NOT TRUE. To my above point, had the original order been thorough there would be no need to go to mediation, would there? Also Mr. Marvin also stated that he would not help me at all unless I removed this review. (end of edit 2023)
(Original review) This review reflects my personal opinion, based on my personal experience. Joe Marvin represented me in a custody case a very long time ago (2008-2010). I am now, and I was then, very disappointed across the board. An example would be the final agreement (decree). It was as cookie-cutter as they come, with no attention to detail or personal consideration for what I was hoping to achieve. With a less-than-mediocre decree, I have found myself in perpetual conflict with the other party. This could have been prevented all together, had the paperwork been drawn up to reflect our individual needs at the time. In responding to another less-than-stellar Google review, Mr. Marvins office states "Client satisfaction is our #1 priority and we welcome the opportunity to address and resolve your specific concerns." This couldn't be farther from the truth. In fact, when I called him recently to "address and resolve" my specific concerns, Mr. Marvin was receptive at first, but ironically was not interested in resolving anything. Trust me, going through a custody proceeding is not easy, but having a lawyer that makes things worse, just makes things worse. Choose wisely! RESPONSE TO RESPONSE: Contrary to what Mr. Marvins paralegal makes it sound like in the response below, I did contact mediation. (ANOKA County Mediation services) In fact that was the first thing I did prior to contacting Mr. Marvin. I had a question about the first agreement that Mr. Marvin had drawn up and was signed in 2010. ONE QUESTION and he couldn't even help me with that. No where in the documents does it say Joe Marvin will no longer speak to you concerning your case unless you go to mediation. This just goes to show that Joe has no idea what his clients are needing or wanting. Do yourself a favor... Hire a lawyer that will answer questions about your case even down the road- long after your check has been cashed. IMHO (end of original review)
