I'm sorry I'm not paying you $250 when we haven't even spoken and all I'm seeing is voluntary dismissal additionally having been refused to speak to the lawyer to get on the same page of where we want the case to go.

Extremely Disappointed With My Representation My experience with attorney Bryan Sumner was deeply disappointing, and I would not recommend him based on the representation I received. I retained Mr. Sumner in connection with my civil case against WakeMed after I was terminated while approximately 8½ months pregnant. My case involved issues surrounding vaccination requirements shortly before I was scheduled to leave for maternity leave. I entrusted him with a case that affected my career, finances, pregnancy, and ability to provide for my child. I paid approximately $20,000 in legal fees with the expectation that my case would receive serious, consistent, and aggressive representation. Instead, I was left feeling that my case never received the level of attention or advocacy that the amount of money I paid warranted. This litigation stretched across an already devastating period of my life. I was dealing with becoming a single mother, losing my employment, relocating back to New Jersey, caring for my seriously ill father, and ultimately losing my father in 2023. In February 2024, Mr. Sumner informed me that my case had been remanded from federal court back to Wake County state court. By June 2024, he notified me that WakeMed had filed a motion to dismiss and that my case was facing the possibility of being dismissed. After everything I had invested financially and emotionally, I was extremely dissatisfied with how my representation and case progressed. I understand that attorneys cannot guarantee the outcome of litigation. My complaint is about my experience with the representation, communication, attention to my case, and the value I believe I received for nearly $20,000 in legal fees. Mr. Sumner also discussed personal circumstances occurring in his own life during the representation. While I can sympathize with anyone experiencing a family loss, I was a paying client simultaneously experiencing the death of my own father and enormous personal hardship. I expected my attorney’s professional obligations to my case to remain a priority. I later learned that Mr. Sumner was no longer with the firm through which I originally dealt with him. Given my experience, I would personally never retain him again or recommend him to someone facing serious employment litigation. When someone pays an attorney thousands of dollars and places an important part of their life in that attorney’s hands, trust, communication, preparation, accountability, and diligent representation matter. I walked away from this experience feeling that the trust I placed in my attorney was misplaced. Potential clients should ask detailed questions about communication, case strategy, fees, responsibility for the file if an attorney changes firms, and how their case will be handled before signing a retainer or paying substantial legal fees.
