Unethical and Disheartening Experience Colusa County Public Defender & DA Office My experience with Public Defender Albert Smith and District Attorney Matthew Beauchamp has been deeply disappointing and concerning. During my son’s arraignment, I witnessed unprofessional behavior and disregard for fairness and due process. Mr. Smith had never spoken to his client before the hearing he only approached him moments before his name was called at the bench and in front of everyone to discuss his options he also apologized, blaming the “jail accessibility system.” That excuse is untrue, as our public notary was able to meet with my son in custody and obtain his signature that same day without issue. Before the hearing, I personally brought important evidence showing that my son’s San Francisco bench warrant resulted from misinformation and scheduling confusion by his prior attorney. Mr. Smith refused to review or accept the evidence, even though it was directly relevant. When I tried to clarify that I was simply a parent providing documents, he accused me of “practicing law without a license.” I reminded him that I was not giving legal advice just sharing critical documentation that could help his client and we are not at court. He abruptly ended the conversation by saying, “This conversation is concluded.” In court, the DA’s office and Mr. Smith even referenced my son’s sealed juvenile record, which should be off-limits and irrelevant. The courtroom atmosphere was one of dismissiveness and gaslighting, especially toward me as a woman and a mother trying to advocate for fairness. The judge herself appeared uncomfortable when the DA made a questionable request, stating, “I don’t think I can sign off on that,” since it was her last day. It is deeply troubling to see this level of disregard for professionalism, transparency, and constitutional rights in a small community. I left that courtroom feeling betrayed by the very system that is supposed to protect justice not manipulate it. If you are a family seeking fair representation or respectful treatment, please know that your concerns may not be taken seriously here. The lack of integrity and accountability is shameful and harmful to public trust. - MOTHER-

Albert Smith is very professional, and a very good attorney. He may not look it, but he gets the job done!

Worst attorney and secretary ever.. never answers the phone.. both lazy and should just pursue a different career because obviously she isn't fit for this kind on job... "apparently we are not in the office" they need to get Shut Down and that old Man Needs to Retire and enjoy his last couple years he has left in him.. I'll give this Lawfirm a 0/0

Very disappointed this guy still has his license...

Albert Smith has an outstanding knowledge of the law and is a dedicated public defender. He is an asset to Colusa County and the clients he serves.
