A few years ago, I and two co-workers were fired from our place of employment in retaliation for a compliance concern that was filed.

As I was trying to decide what to do, someone recommended this law firm to me. I looked at their website and it seemed convincing, so I called to make an appointment. I explicitly stated that there were three of us in the same situation, thinking it would make sense for us to come in together for an initial consultation. The woman on the phone was adamant that we needed to come in separately.

I paid the fee with my CC and made an appointment. This gave me a weird feeling because I know it is customary for an exploratory consultation to be at no cost, but I told myself these guys were top-notch and you get what you pay for.

I was instructed to put together all the documentation I could and email it prior to the meeting, which I did. I arrived at the agreed time and was led to a meeting room (the interaction with the office staff was less than stellar, but I won’t go into that here).

A few minutes later, Kelly came in accompanied by an associate. It quickly became clear that Kelly had not looked at any of the information I had sent and didn’t really know why I was there. To be fair, the associate had taken a superficial look at my files, but I was left feeling like the outcome would have been the same if I had just come in and talked them through the issue (which is what happened during the first 30 minutes of the meeting), instead of spending my weekend putting the information together for them.

Kelly basically told me there wasn’t much to do because this kind of stuff is really hard to prove and that I should just wait to see what my severance cheque would look like. At that point, if I wanted to ask for more money, she could charge me another couple of thousand dollars (in addition to the couple of hundred for this consultation) to send a strongly worded letter to my former employer. One of my other two colleagues also went to see them and had the same experience.

It just felt like my colleague and I were used as an opportunity to make a quick few hundred bucks with very little effort.
