2 months ago we paid $250 for a consult and was told to pay a retainer of $5000 to retain them for a child custody matter for my wife’s son. We spoke to a lady on a video call, the plan was to try mediation. We were told that the $250 we paid for the consult would go towards our $5000 retainer fee… then we got a bill saying we owed them for that after sending the entire $5000 retainer fee… not only did we not get a $250 refund, we got a bill! we were told that the mediation costs would not come out of the retainer, we’d have to pay those separately. We were also told that we would be refunded anything that was left over out of the retainer. While they did not guarantee that there would be anything left, they did imply that it was entirely possible that this matter would not cost the full 5000… it’s not even a very complicated thing we’re trying to do…. When my wife tried to speak with someone at their office about the bill that we got, they were completely incompetent and did not seem to understand that we were told the $250 would be part of the $5000 retainer if we decided to go forward with them. It’s been about two months now and virtually no progress has been made on the matter. As far as we are aware, the only thing that they have done so far is acquire a copy of the original child custody agreement from the court, and tried to email the mother about setting up mediation… It’s been two months and we haven’t even scheduled a mediation date yet… They said that if she didn’t respond to their email within a week they would have her served… As far as my wife and I know, that hasn’t been done yet. They told us that we would receive updated billing statements every two weeks… As far as I’m aware, that hasn’t been done either… However, today, we get a notification from the new attorney they switched us to that our Trust balance has fallen below the minimum amount. We must keep a balance of $2500 and we are sitting at 450 something… How on earth does obtaining one document from the court and sending one email cost over $4500???? We haven’t even scheduled mediation and we’ve already almost spent the entire $5000 retainer???? On what? Maybe we would know if we were getting updated statements… But even still, what could possibly be costing so much money at this stage? The actual process hasn’t even begun yet! Even if they paid to have the mother served, I know service of process does not usually cost more than $150… Usually, it costs far less… At this point, it’s looking like we’re going to have to hire an attorney to get our money back from this attorney so that we can actually get another attorney to do what this attorney’s office said they would do. Unbelievable… how do you spend $4500 in two months on sending an email and retrieving a court document??? Two things we can do for free in just a couple hours!

I know that no matter what I write, some lawyer or paralegal or something will throw some fancy language around to low key discredit me but I’ll post anyways. My lawyer….when he would actually follow up with me when he said he would….was very nice. But I had to chase him over and over and over. But guess what I didn’t have to chase this firm over???? BILLING!!!! So ridiculous the fees they charge. I’m a doofus for ever working with this firm. They saw me coming a mile away. Saw I was in a tight spot and they squeezed all the juice out completely. Good for you Coker, Robb and Cannon.
