My experience with Joe Blata lasted roughly 2½ years and involved two cases he filed against me. That is more than enough time to form an informed opinion. Looking back, his only meaningful “wins” against me were 2 ex parte orders obtained when I was not present to respond. When he later pursued contempt and was required to prove the allegations on the record, he lost. I found his filings difficult to follow, the claims he advanced were contradicted by written reports, prior statements, and the court record itself. In court, some of those assertions produced reactions that spoke for themselves. In my experience, his only advantage was not strong legal analysis. It was familiarity with the Bay County courthouse, its procedures, its personalities, and its routines. That advantage diminished once I retained counsel from outside the local legal circle. The pressure stopped. The pursuit faded. The matter ended. Prospective clients should ask direct questions before paying a retainer: How much time is actually available for your case? How many matters are competing for attention? Are there pending complaints, grievances, or administrative matters requiring a response? Those are fair questions when choosing counsel. After 2½ years, my conclusion is simple: familiarity with a courthouse can carry someone a considerable distance. Eventually, however, the record still matters. Read the filings. Read the orders. Review the public record. Ask questions. Then decide for yourself. I already have.
