I am submitting this formal grievance/review regarding a severe breach of professional conduct, failure to perform basic due diligence, and predatory fee-inflation practices by the respondent, Ms. Worthington of the Worthington Law Firm. During an initial consultation for critical criminal defense representation, Ms. Worthington retrieved a purported criminal history report ("rap sheet") that she claimed was tied to my identity. She proceeded to read aloud a litany of serious charges and prior convictions. None of these records belonged to me; they were entirely unassociated with my true legal background. Upon hearing these false allegations, I immediately and explicitly notified Ms. Worthington that she was operating under a flawed, incorrect, or misattributed record. I proactively offered to email my certified, true background documentation to rectify the mistake. Ms. Worthington flatly refused to accept, review, or cross-reference my verifiable record, stating rigidly that her information "came straight from the court." Despite my clear repudiation of the erroneous record, Ms. Worthington immediately leveraged the false charges to declare that the firm's retainer fee would dramatically increase. She used unverified, incorrect third-party data as a bad-faith justification to inflate her financial demands, completely ignoring her baseline duty of competence and accurate fact-finding. Ms. Worthington concluded the interaction by stating she would calculate a finalized, elevated price and follow up with me. She never made contact again. This abrupt abandonment occurred during a critical window of legal vulnerability, directly impacting my ability to secure timely representation to protect my rights and provide for my dependent children. Based on the rules governing legal practitioners in the State of California, the respondents conduct appears to violate the following standards: Rule 1.1 (Competence) Failure to apply the baseline diligence and thoroughness necessary to properly analyze a prospective clients legal matter by relying entirely on misattributed, unverified records. Rule 1.3 (Diligence)Failure to act with commitment and dedication to the interests of a client/prospective client, followed by an abrupt cessation of contact without notice. Rule 1.5 (Fees for Legal Services)Attempting to extract an unconscionable, inflated fee structured upon entirely fictional criminal liabilities. Business and Professions Code 6106 (Moral Turpitude/Dishonesty) Utilizing known false or disputed data as a pressure tactic to demand higher financial compensation constitutes dishonest conduct unbecoming of an officer of the court.
