Retained Law Office of John J Guzman back in 2012 for guardianship case involving my grandson. Retainer was $2,500 and was told verbally that this would be fixed price if case was uncontested, which turned out to be the case as neither parents showed up in court. However, I was billed over $400 more due to “additional costs”. Lesson learned: get everything in writing which, in this case, is the fixed fee for an uncontested case. Fast forward to 2026… I applied for a passport for my grandson and was informed by the passport office that the guardianship documents Guzman Law sent me at the conclusion of my case lacked official court seals. I contacted the law firm to obtain the sealed documents and was told they no longer had records. After spending a lengthy amount of time calling various agencies and court branches, I was finally able to obtain a copy of the sealed documents at an expense of roughly $125. On principle, I requested Guzman Law to reimburse me for this expense as they were responsible for sending me the sealed documents. They refused and wished me the best of luck in the future! It’s law firms like this that gives the profession a bad name…
