Mr. Strianese served as the arbitrator in my AAA arbitration against a major national retailer, in which I appeared pro se. In my view, the proceeding was marked by significant procedural irregularities and a troubling imbalance in the treatment of the parties. The arbitrator appeared unfamiliar with the factual and evidentiary foundations of my claims, permitted the Respondent to introduce a substantial evidence binder at the last minute without meaningful opportunity for review or response, and failed to maintain appropriate decorum during the hearing when counsel for the Respondent engaged in openly dismissive and disruptive behavior during my testimony.

Throughout the proceeding, I believe I was held to a materially higher evidentiary and procedural standard than the Respondent, despite numerous inconsistencies and disputed representations in the Respondent’s case. The arbitration concluded with an award of zero damages.

I cannot speculate as to whether these issues arose from inexperience, bias, indifference, or other causes. Others may have had satisfactory experiences with Mr. Strianese in conventional litigation matters. However, based upon my experience, I would strongly caution pro se claimants—particularly those arbitrating against large corporate entities—to carefully consider whether a different arbitrator would provide a more balanced and procedurally fair forum.
