I'll start with a fact - I operate in life with the intention to avoid the need for an attorney. Despite this fact, my wife and I recognized estate planning is not a subject to be taken lightly or self-performed - although I had purchased Nolo software with that intent. We did not conduct an exhaustive search but Samantha came highly recommended. One of our first criteria is always "buy local" and Santa Cruz Co. has limited estate-planning choices. We trusted the recommendation and have zero regrets. On first phone contact, we were scheduled for a consult, which we assumed would be more meet & greet than substance. We realized the day before that we were supposed to gather & upload requested documents to their secure portal. Since we were not prepared, they graciously re-scheduled to allow us time to prepare. Although initially surprised by the details requested, I now recognize that their efficiency starts at first contact, so come prepared. Once we got our act together, we consulted with Samantha on October 2nd. With her pleasant demeanor and detailed process, we eagerly engaged her services. From there we were in her queue and she had everything needed to prepare our plan. We received notice of the completed draft on October 31. After minor document edits & clarifications, we executed the pour-over will, trust, durable powers of attorney, advance healthcare directives and all related documents on December 4. Then the "fun" began. Samantha is very diligent and precise in her document preparation. However her clarity on process, of funding the trust, ensures the hard work is not wasted. Her analogy that the trust is a bucket in which to place all your assets, established that the process is not complete upon executing the documents. Funding the trust is an essential step that she's crystal clear about. To support clients through the funding process, She provides sample letters and clear guidance, based on her prior experiences - with lenders, insurance, banks, and brokerage firms. She and her team were very responsive to my many questions about process and procedures at various institutions. Their support helped us fund the trust with all our assets by the end of January. From start to finish (after our initial reschedule), the process took less than four months. Our example is not complicated but does include a home, several retirement accounts, a pension, a business (LLC), two children and multiple siblings. In the end, we received clear, supportive, compassionate guidance from start to finish at an extremely reasonable rate. Samantha and her team prepared hard copies of all documents in a tabbed & sectioned binder, along with digital copies of everything. They prepared all documents needed to transfer assets to the trust and stayed engaged throughout the process with a smile and a "thank you". Now, six months later I received a follow-up to confirm we completed all tasks needed to fund the trust. We are so appreciative of their diligence, efficiency, compassion, respect, and follow-through that I'd recommend Samantha and her team to anyone needing estate planning legal services.
