Hiring Megan and her team at Ruth LLP was one of the biggest mistakes our family has ever made. I’m writing this review because I genuinely hope to prevent another family from experiencing what ours has endured. If you’re facing federal white-collar charges, an experienced public defender may serve you just as well. If you’re facing serious criminal charges, I strongly encourage you to look elsewhere before trusting this firm with your freedom. Initially, Megan and her team appeared compassionate, attentive, and genuinely invested in our family member’s case. Unfortunately, that impression changed dramatically after we retained them. We paid nearly $200,000, believing we were hiring experienced trial attorneys. Instead, we repeatedly watched them appear overwhelmed, disorganized, and unprepared in court. One of the most disturbing moments occurred at the beginning of trial when Megan began crying in front of the courtroom because she said she felt overwhelmed. Criminal defense is stressful, but when someone’s freedom is at stake, their attorney needs to maintain composure and confidence. She also texted a family member about the high suicide rate among defense attorneys due to job-related stress. While we sympathize with the pressures of the profession, these were not reassuring things to witness or hear from someone responsible for our loved one’s future. Her courtroom performance was equally concerning. She spoke so softly that her questioning was difficult to follow, frequently appeared to lack direction, and was repeatedly pressured by the judge to get to the point. We cannot recall her successfully arguing a single significant issue. Even her decision to wear a leopard-print suit to court struck us as inappropriate given the seriousness of the proceedings. Most troubling was the trial itself. Despite assuring us they were prepared, Megan gave no opening statement and ultimately presented no defense case, even though multiple witnesses were ready and willing to testify. Those witnesses were simply told they were no longer needed. We understand these can be strategic decisions, but based on everything we witnessed, we seriously questioned whether there was a coherent strategy at all. Her partner, Eliza, also came across as cold, negative, and lacking compassion. To make matters worse, the firm later publicized our family member’s case on its website in a way we believe misrepresented the outcome, which was incredibly upsetting. Let me be clear: This review isn’t about losing a case. Even excellent attorneys lose. It’s about the lack of preparation, professionalism, and effective advocacy we personally witnessed after being assured our family member was in capable hands. Nearly $200,000 later, we’re left with heartbreak and regret. We’ve since encountered attorneys with substantially more courtroom experience charging a fraction of their fees. Please don’t confuse expensive representation with quality representation. Research your attorney’s actual trial experience, seek multiple opinions, and don’t let a convincing first impression determine such an important decision. Our family trusted this firm with someone’s freedom. If I could go back and change one decision, it would be hiring them. I sincerely hope sharing our experience prevents another family from making the same mistake.
