I retained Marcus Smith to assist with reviewing and negotiating a severance agreement with my former employer. while he was knowledgeable in employment law, m overall experience was frustrating due to the communication and responsiveness issues.

Marcus was often difficult to reach, and I frequently had to follow up multiple times just to receive updates. there were several instances where messages went unanswered for days, and in some cases I had to check in repeatedly before getting a response. For example, after asking about the status of a demand letter, I did not received confirmation it had been sent until over a week later, after I followed up again.

Communication felt reactive rather than proactive. It often seemed that updates only came after I reached out, rather than being provided consistently. In multiple cases, after I followed up, I would be told that he had "just follow up" with opposing counsel, and shortly after that, movement would occur. This made it feel like progress depended on my prompting rather than active case management.

There were also delays attributed to scheduling conflicts, workload, or availability, which extended the overall timeline of the matter. At one point, I was told opposing counsel was out of the office, and there was little that could be done in the meantime, which further slowed things down.

To his credit, we were able to secure some favorable non-monetary terms in the final agreement. however, we were not able to improve the severance compensation, and the process required consistent follow-up on my end to keep things moving.

If you are considering working with Marcus, I would recommend setting clear expectations around communication and response times upfront. Based on my experience, you should be prepared to actively follow up to stay informed on your case.

I scheduled a phone consultation with this attorney hoping to get guidance on a difficult situation. While we briefly discussed the basics of my case, the majority of the call was focused on his fees and how much he would charge. Immediately after the call, he sent me a Venmo request for $150 for the consult, which I paid because I believed I’d be receiving follow-up help or at least a response to my questions.

Unfortunately, after I paid, he stopped responding entirely. I reached out again for clarification and assistance and never heard back. It felt like I paid $150 for nothing. This was disappointing and unprofessional, and I would not recommend this experience to others.

Cares about making sure that kids are protected and proceedings are fair. Most of all is a real advocate and does a beautiful job advocating for his clients wellness and mental health, while doing his job to actually protect and fight for his clients in the court.
