I want to start by saying that my lawyer was very kind, compassionate, and professional throughout my case. My concerns are not about the way I was treated by my attorney, but rather about the financial side of the process and some of the communication surrounding the billing. I paid a $3,500 retainer with the understanding that this was going to be an agreed 50/50 divorce. I also understood that I needed to maintain a replenishment balance of at least $1,000, which I was prepared to do. What became difficult for me was being charged additional fees from my account, including charges associated with sending out my final divorce decree. I had to add money to my account several times to cover charges that I had not anticipated would be separate from what I had already paid toward my divorce. The most difficult part was that my ex received his final divorce decree before I did, and I found out that my divorce had been finalized in a way that was emotionally very difficult for me. Having additional unexpected charges at the same time made the experience even more stressful. Ultimately, what I believed would be an agreed 50/50 divorce with a $3,500 retainer turned into approximately $7,000 in legal expenses. That was a significant financial impact for me, and I wish I had been given a clearer understanding from the beginning of what the total potential cost could be, including replenishments and final filing/service-related charges. I am grateful for the kindness and professionalism I received from my attorney. My feedback is simply that I believe clients would benefit from much clearer communication about the anticipated total cost of an agreed divorce and which expenses will be billed separately, so they can financially prepare for the process without feeling caught off guard.
