My involvement with Hope Lefeber began well, but transitioned into an overall disappointing experience. Initially, Hope was very responsive and advised me on what to expect and how to prepare for multiple proffers as well as arraignment. However, after the arraignment, a shift occurred in the communication, responsiveness, and preparation. After 7 continuances spanning nearly 4 years, it was not confirmed until less than two weeks prior to my sentencing hearing, there would be no further continuances. As a result, I had to scramble to arrange cross-country travel, and rush to get the court filings completed. The sentencing memorandum also did not appear to include anything within the 4 years since arraignment. There were no updates or additions to character statements or inclusion of my community involvement over the past four years.

Maybe what is most disappointing is that I did not receive any preparation or guidance on preparing for the sentencing hearing. In reality, it was not until about 15 minutes prior to my sentencing hearing when I was advised that I would have the opportunity to speak directly to the Judge and I could write something down if I wanted. Having had more time to prepare a statement for the judge could have made significant difference as I truly believe my situation was well-positioned for a probation outcome – which two co-defendants received even having more than TWICE the loss amount. Unfortunately, I will never know definitively if it was these co-defendant’s significant preparation and/or my lack thereof that made the difference.

In closing, although I did not receive probation, I am thankful the Judge was merciful and went below guidelines to all the defendants in this case as I am responsible for my actions and put myself in this situation in the first place. However, I wish I would have been guided for better preparation, especially given the amount of time that we had to document a better record to present to the judge.
