Melissa was my divorce attorney last Spring. I was vulnerable and scared as I imagine many of her clients are.
I signed up for the $5,000 divorce as there would not be any expected hiccups, however I did expect more than paperwork for $5,000.

We went back and forth through the process. Emails went unanswered, questions ignored, zero reassurance during this scary time.
Every ask would require more money and delay the trial.

I met her for the FIRST time on my trial date thirty minutes before my scheduled time. She reviewed the questions she would ask me, but she omitted this one and caught me off guard: are you happy with my services?

She’s a smart woman and it was clear I was not. This was intentional and meant to put my agreement on the record. I said,” yes” because I wasn’t sure what to say. I was on the spot, in front of my ex, the judge….
I said yes because I didn’t want this delayed.
I also didn’t have time or opportunity to make these considerations. Should I and is it in my best interest to delay the trial and consider? I feel my attorney should’ve explained the benefits and risk rather than use the threat of delaying the trial to shut me up.

I’m not sure if I can file an official complaint against her for what I feel was intentional and borderline unethical, but that’ll be for the Bar to decide. Im thinking surprising me with that question and getting an affirmative on the record may have cost me the opportunity to file a formal complaint, but it’s enough to tell my story here.
