We reached out to this firm for help with cooperative formation after receiving personal recommendations for several of their attorneys. Unfortunately, we were never able to get in touch with any of them and were instead connected with a newer attorney at the firm who is not yet licensed in Colorado. The intake process had some friction points along the way - emails weren't reliably received, and the attorney we were matched with had not properly blocked out their calendar, which made scheduling more difficult than it needed to be.

We were also unable to get straightforward answers about billing rates, but the figures we did come across were higher than what we have seen from firms that regularly work with VC-backed startups. For a firm that positions itself as serving the cooperative and solidarity economy, that felt inconsistent with the principle of cooperating amongst cooperators.

Many groups in our community are already functioning as cooperatives but cannot take advantage of Colorado law to formally incorporate as LCAs because of high rates and opaque cost structures. People who have spent decades building organizations like a print studio serving values-based organizations and mutual aid groups, and a ceramics cooperative that makes studio space accessible to the community, understand deeply how their groups should run. While these attorneys certainly bring valuable experience working with cooperatives, each coop is unique. Most don't need specialist support in fundraising and structuring an organization for investment purposes, and bundling those services into a high fixed fee ends up excluding the very cooperatives that would benefit from this firm's expertise the most.

These groups are not looking for a handout. They simply want to pay for the legal services they actually need, without being asked to absorb costs for expertise that doesn't apply to them. That seems like a reasonable expectation for a firm that holds cooperation as a core value.

We wish the firm well and hope they find ways to make their important work more accessible to the communities that need it most.
