Gatlin Voelker

First of all, there is a much bigger history and context here than people seem to realize. The Gatlin family has historically been very religious, and religion has repeatedly seemed to overlap with the people and institutions involved in my experience with the Campbell County family-court system. During my family-court case, Abigail Voelker told me that I should get with one of her brothers to essentially help further my case. That immediately raised serious concerns for me. When someone connected to the court is directing a litigant toward a family member for legal help, I believe that at minimum raises legitimate questions about conflicts of interest, ethics, and whether personal or family relationships are becoming intertwined with the court process. My concerns did not develop from one interaction. I've dealt with Campbell County Family Court for years, including proceedings before Judge Voelker, contempt proceedings, a DVO/EPO, a GAL, opposing counsel, and other court personnel. After everything I've experienced, I believe people have every right to ask questions about relationships among attorneys, court officials, and their families rather than simply assuming the system is impartial because everyone involved is a professional. I also have serious concerns about Brandon Voelker and his professional history. I have been told or have understood that he has worked for multiple municipalities and is now associated with this firm. I would want anyone considering hiring this firm to independently examine that employment history and the circumstances surrounding his departures rather than simply taking anyone's word for it—including mine. Based on my own experiences, I would not trust this law firm with my case. If you're considering hiring them, I would strongly recommend doing your own research: look at the attorneys' professional histories, disciplinary records if any exist, public court records, potential conflicts, and exactly how much representation is going to cost. My criticism isn't simply that I lost a ruling or didn't like an outcome. My concern is about whether money, personal relationships, family connections, and institutional relationships can create a system where someone without those connections is at a serious disadvantage. Those are questions that deserve answers based on records and evidence.
