Do not hire and do not trust! If you are in an emergency custody situation and you are trying to protect your child, Mr. Spears is not the guy for you. We recently paid him a $5000 retainer to handle a mental health emergency for our daughter. In our emergency hearing, Mr. Spears showed up unprepared with his pants unzipped, asking us a bunch of questions right before the hearing that we had already told him the answers to. He also failed to even mention the sole reason for the emergency to the judge, which was our daughter's mental health. Therefore, the judge did not address the visitation issues and enforced visitation. Mr. Spears, however, misunderstood the judge and told us that visitation was halted and we won. Only to find out the next day, after he was rebuked publicly by the judge, that he was mistaken and visitation was to be enforced. Due to this, not only was my daughter forced to later go to visitation that, in turn, worsened her mental health issues, but my daughter was out of town and unavailable when her mother showed up to get her and a motion for contempt was filed against us. Once we hired another attorney, Mr. Spears refused to reimburse any funds we paid to him. So this has wholeheartedly been the worst $5000 we have ever spent. He told us verbally in our meeting that the $5000 was a retainer, but then the document we signed said we agreed to a flat fee (our fault for assuming we could trust what he said). If you are needing someone to help you and your child, Mr. Spears is not your guy. I've attached the final emails between us. Hopefully after this horrible experience he will retire from representing children and parents in emergency situations. This is the absolute WORST experience we have ever had with an attorney. Unfortunately, our daughter is the one who has suffered the most due to his incompetence.
