A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing I believe this firm does not have its client's best interests in mind. Rather, they are more concerned with trying to extract most amount of money possible in legal fees. At least that has been my personal experience as a client. For context, I own a US utility patent which I was planning to enforce in the Amazon marketplace. I initially reached out to John after viewing one of his YouTube videos. He did offer a free consultation, which was very helpful. During our 30 minute meeting, he said that the first step was to get started as a seller on Amazon (good advice) and then once I was on the platform, we could hire him for a "modest fee" of only $2500 USD to send a letter to Amazon and take down any infringing listings. At the time, we were only selling on Shopify. I did what he recommended, and when I reached out a few months later, the fee had now nearly tripled. It would be a total of about $7500 USD — $3500 for an initial "patent analysis" and then another $3500-$4000 to send the letter. I paid the first part, and the patent analysis was helpful, but much to my surprise, I then learned that the letter to Amazon would only take care of two specific ASINs (not even the highest ranking ones), leaving about 150 others in the marketplace. John then told me that I would "just need to hire him" for a new letter every time I would want to take down another ASIN. Thankfully, I did not go through with the letter and just cut my losses after the initial patent analysis. I was feeling very uneasy about this whole situation, especially at such a challenging time for our business, dealing with so many IP infringers and knockoffs. So to be sure, I sought a second opinion, reached out to another Amazon Lawyer (David Miller Law), and was able to get everything I needed out of a simple one hour consultation for a reasonable fee. Indeed, as I suspected, the best fit for my situation has been to take advantage of Amazon's APEX program (Amazon Patent Evaluation eXpress). We have since gone through the process, got our resolution ID, and have been able to clear the marketplace of all 162 infringing ASINs. I did all this on my own and paid nothing further in legal fees. It was fairly simple. Best of all, thanks to the APEX resolution ID number, we are now able to take down new infringing listings in a matter of hours with a simple notification through Amazon Brand Registry. What was most deceptive and troubling about John, is that he insisted that the APEX program was practically no longer in effect. He said it just wasn't worth it for Amazon. That is false. The APEX program is alive and well. All the other attorneys I spoke to confirmed this, and I experienced it first hand. It just wasn't the most lucrative option for HIM. John also finished our last video call with a slick bit (seemed rehearsed) about me swimming in cash and keeping him on speed dial because I would be making so much money. That just felt wrong, and it's when I realized he did not have my best interest in mind. In the end, I guess I paid $3500 USD for a patent analysis and a valuable learning experience not to trust lawyers so easily. There are good ones though, you just have to do your due diligence, which is why I took the time to write this review. Anyways, I hope this story has been helpful. If you are a small business owner looking to defend your intellectual property rights on Amazon, capital efficiency is a must. This law firm is not. Thanks for reading.
