This is not only a five star review for Caplan Wilkinson, but a PSA for anyone who does not have their affairs/family trust documents in order. Let’s face it, no one likes to think or talk about these things…especially when you are relatively young and healthy. The other deterrent is, of course, thinking about the related expenses when it seems like there are so many other pressing budget items. Even though my husband and I don’t have children, certain life events made us realize it was high time to put our affairs in order. We engaged Liz Caplan of Caplan Wilkinson and she guided us through the process of creating a family trust that will not only carry out our wishes, but make it simple and easy for those that we appointed as beneficiaries. She was kind and thoughtful and helped us create a Family Trust that is complete and was affordable. Shortly after doing that, went through an experience with my mother who was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Prior to her diagnosis she had a will created by a law firm “specializing” in wills and trusts. When she was diagnosed, we decided to sit down and look at her will and found out that it was sloppily done and full pitfalls. Long story short, we engaged another lawyer (because my mother did not live in California at the time) to try to correct the Will…and again it wasn’t done properly. My mother ended up in California for her final months and at that time we again engaged Liz Caplan to help us sort out her affairs. She met with my mother and treated her with kindness, compassion, and a gentleness that put my mom at ease and helped us to “fix” as many of her disastrous documents as possible….from the Power of Attorney to her Health Care Directives. Unfortunately, when she passed, we learned the importance of having things done correctly the first time. We ran into so many issues, problems and delays because of the way her will was originally created. It was clear that her original lawyer she had not attempted the simplest understanding of her estate and lifestyle. Every time we hit a road block, we turned to Liz and she had the legal solution to help us through. Her knowledge of the law helped us avoid unnecessary and costly probate proceedings and solved issues with the DMV and insurance companies. So, while no one wants to think, talk about or spend money on the uncomfortable issue of putting your final affairs in order, trust me, it should be a priority for everyone…whether you have children or not. Having it done, done properly, and updated from time to time, will save time, headaches, heartache, and ultimately money in the long run. I highly recommend Caplan Wilkinson to be the law firm to provide this essential service and peace of mind.
