Reflexive bias against pro se litigants

After reading the firm’s extensive marketing about his ‘formidable’ civil rights practice and commitment to mentoring the next generation. In reality, the interaction reflected something very different: a perfunctory, non‑responsive email that appeared not to engage with the actual posture of my case. My inquiry was narrowly focused on prospective § 1983 / Monell representation. In response, Mr. Cook sent a cursory ‘we do not get involved in pro se cases under any circumstances’ statement, as though he had not read beyond the word ‘pro se.’ That kind of boilerplate dismissal is exactly the sort of ego‑driven gatekeeping that keeps impacted people shut out of the civil rights bar. The public biography emphasizes ‘fighting for the community’ and ‘developing future lawyers,’ but when an affected parent who has already litigated a federal habeas matter pro se seeks counsel for a separate civil rights action, there is no effort to understand the issues, no clarifying questions, and no meaningful engagement. The disconnect between the advertised values and the actual conduct was stark enough that I will be directing my case and any potential referrals to attorneys whose practices more closely align with their stated commitments.
