I was referred to Josh Brown, a partner at Boyce, because of his experience in estate planning Our initial meeting lasted about an hour, and I left feeling like all of our questions had been answered. We signed and notarized the documents, paid roughly $3,500, and walked away with a well-organized binder that gave us confidence we had created a revocable living trust and comprehensive estate plan Two years later, after our family had grown, I contacted Josh to discuss updating what I believed was our revocable trust. I brought the original binder to our meeting expecting to make a few amendments. To my surprise, I learned we didn’t have a revocable living trust at all. My understanding had been wrong, and the documents we paid for were not what I believed we had purchased. While Josh explained the legal distinctions, I left feeling that there had been a significant communication failure from the beginning. Whether the misunderstanding was mine, his, or shared, I don’t believe a client should leave a $3,500 estate planning engagement confused about one of the most fundamental pieces of their plan. I left that meeting feeling disappointed, undervalued, and uncertain that our family’s assets had been protected in the way we intended. I’m grateful I discovered the issue before something happened to either of us, because otherwise we never would have known. I have friends and colleagues at Boyce, and I don’t believe this experience reflects the entire firm. However, based on my personal experience, I would not trust Josh Brown with my estate planning needs.
